Things I Thought Would Matter in a Home (But Don’t)
When I first started house hunting years ago, I had a checklist that looked like something out of a real estate magazine: open concept layout, gleaming granite countertops, double vanities in every bathroom, and yes — even a double oven. I thought those things would make or break my happiness in a home.
But after living in multiple houses here in Auburn and Opelika, I’ve learned something surprising: what truly matters often isn’t what we obsess over in the beginning.
-
Peace and quiet beats open concept. That giant, airy space? It’s great… until you realize noise carries everywhere.
-
A good neighbor is worth more than a double oven. You can always upgrade appliances — you can’t upgrade the people next door.
-
Comfort beats granite. Pretty counters are nice, but they won’t matter much if the house doesn’t feel right.
When you’re buying a home in Auburn, Opelika, or anywhere else, don’t get distracted by the shiny features. Pay attention to the intangibles: the street’s vibe, how the home makes you feel, and whether the layout fits your real life — not just your Pinterest board.
I’ve helped countless home buyers and sellers in Auburn and Opelika realize that their “must-have” list often changes once we start touring homes. That’s where having an experienced, full-time REALTOR® makes a huge difference. I’ll help you sort through what truly matters, whether you’re moving across town or relocating here for Auburn University.
And if your move is taking you out of the area, I can personally connect you with a trusted REALTOR® anywhere in the country. I vet every referral so you’re in the best possible hands — no matter where you’re headed.
What’s one thing you thought you had to have in a house… but didn’t end up needing? Share it in the comments — I’d love to hear your story.#bhhs
