Citizens’ Academy: Public Works & Environmental Services
I had such a fun (and eye-opening) day with the City of Auburn’s Citizens’ Academy, diving into the behind-the-scenes work of Public Works and Environmental Services. We kicked things off with a welcome and tour, followed by an equipment showcase that gave us a close look at the big machines crews use every day to keep Auburn running smoothly.
From there, we saw demonstrations with the Construction and Maintenance Division, visiting work sites and learning how the teams handle everything from road repairs to city infrastructure. After returning to the facility, we enjoyed lunch and a presentation from Environmental Services, where we learned how Auburn handles garbage, trash, recycling, and even animal control.
It’s amazing how much goes on behind the scenes to make sure our community runs smoothly. From the drivers operating the massive garbage trucks, to the tractors keeping city spaces in shape, to the Animal Control team working to protect residents and pets, every department plays a vital role in Auburn’s quality of life.
I even got to “pretend drive” one of the trucks — so if anyone needs their trash picked up, I might be ready for the job! 🚛 But in all seriousness, I left with a new appreciation for just how dedicated and hardworking our city staff are. Auburn truly is a special place to live, and being able to see the teamwork that goes into keeping it that way made me even prouder to call it home.
