Statue celebrates 125 years of women at Auburn University
Auburn University honored 125 years of women on campus Friday, September 27, 2019 by dedicating a nearly seven-foot tall statue honoring female students. The commemorative art installation was created through a generous gift from Paul and Melanie Whatley Barstad, a 1975 graduate, to honor Melanie’s parents, James and Juanita Whatley.
The installation reflects the art created for the 125th anniversary, designed by Heather Peevy, graphic artist in Auburn’s Office of Alumni Affairs. Lauren Patterson, a 2011 Auburn graduate and design director at Advent, brought the artwork to life, modeling it after the university’s 125 Years of Auburn Women logo. The vintage cameo-inspired silhouette is textured with rings designed to look like the inside of an oak tree. For more information click here.
The nearly 1,000-pound bronze statue is located next to Mell Classroom Building in the middle of campus and faces Samford Hall.
