Transformation Garden at Auburn: A 16-Acre Living Laboratory
Have you driven by the south end of Auburn’s campus lately and wondered what’s being built? That’s where Auburn University’s ambitious Transformation Garden is taking shape — and it’s already full of promise, intrigue, and excitement.
What Is the Transformation Garden?
This 16-acre site is being designed as a classroom, research lab, and outreach hub all rolled into one. It’s intended to reflect the full diversity of Alabama’s plant-based agricultural industries — from row crops and vegetables, to ornamentals, medicinal plants, and hydroponics systems.
At its heart is Auburn’s historic Old Rotation — a research plot in continuous use since 1896 — which now becomes the starting point for a broader garden that wraps around it.
Hands-On Learning, Research & Innovation
The garden will bring students, faculty, and community together for cutting-edge agricultural practice:
-
Container & vertical farms: Auburn has already installed two shipping-container vertical farms, using hydroponics to grow produce year-round under controlled conditions.
-
Crop trials & variety testing: Students and researchers will test plants for heat tolerance, pest resistance, soil performance, and more — work that helps nurseries and farmers make better decisions. 3
-
Education across disciplines: It’s not just for horticulture. Biology, engineering, environmental science, and even business students may find opportunity here to engage with sustainability, food systems, urban farming, and more.
-
Supplying campus dining: Some sections of the garden will produce food for Auburn’s dining services. The vertical farms and other installations aim to reduce food miles and support local, fresh sourcing.
Garden Layout, Corridors & Connectivity
The Transformation Garden connects Auburn’s existing green spaces into what is being called a Green Corridor. Paths will link the garden to the Davis Arboretum, Gogue Performing Arts Center, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, and even Town Creek Park via extended walkways.
A key phase in progress is the Children’s Garden (≈1.5 acres), which will offer interactive, sensory, and educational elements for engaging younger visitors. That project is slated for Summer 2025 through Spring 2026.
Why This Project Matters
There are many reasons why Auburn is investing in the Transformation Garden:
-
Largeest “classroom” on campus: On any given day, you’ll find students and faculty actively working in the field — planting, testing, designing, or maintaining various garden modules.
-
Bridge old & new: It fuses Auburn’s agricultural legacy (like the Old Rotation) with modern techniques like hydroponics, urban farming, and controlled environment agriculture.
-
Community & outreach: Beyond campus, this garden becomes a space where citizens, K–12 students, gardeners, and professionals can observe, learn, and grow — strengthening Auburn’s role in agricultural education. Food security & local sourcing: With parts serving campus dining, the garden fosters sustainability, better nutrition, and resilience in local food systems.
What to Watch For (And What You’ll See)
Right now, workers and machines are sculpting pathways, planting infrastructure, and laying the framework of what will become a rich, living space. Maybe you’ll snap photos of the start of an irrigation system, greenhouse foundations, or students planning layouts. I can’t wait to see how it evolves!
In coming months, you’ll start seeing garden beds, vertical containers, shade houses, demonstration plots, and interpretive signage. Stay tuned — this is going to be one of Auburn’s most fascinating spaces.
