Auburn football game day returned to Auburn, Alabama, Saturday night as the Auburn Tigers opened their 2026 home schedule against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Jordan-Hare Stadium—and Auburn came away with a 43–8 victory.

Auburn Football Game Day Returns to The Plains

Saturday, September 12, marked Auburn University’s first home football game of the 2026 season.

The Tigers welcomed Southern Miss to Jordan-Hare Stadium for Kickoff on the Plains, and Auburn fans were asked to wear white for the home opener.

There was plenty of excitement long before anyone entered the stadium.

That’s one of my favorite things about Auburn football season. The football game may be the main event, but game day stretches well beyond Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Downtown Auburn Before the Game

Before kickoff, Downtown Auburn was full of people enjoying the day.

Starting around Toomer’s Corner on College Street, you could see Auburn fans walking downtown, gathering with friends, visiting restaurants and shops, and simply enjoying being back on The Plains for football season.

Magnolia Avenue had its own game-day energy.

People were laughing, talking, walking toward campus and soaking up the atmosphere.

This is something that’s difficult to explain to someone who has never experienced an Auburn home game.

Downtown Auburn and Auburn University sit right beside one another, so game day doesn’t feel confined to a stadium or parking lot. The activity spills into the streets, sidewalks, restaurants, shops and surrounding neighborhoods.

Of course, Auburn football wouldn’t be Auburn football without tailgating.

Tents, tables, food, televisions and Auburn gear seem to appear everywhere.

Some fans arrive early. Others spend hours downtown before walking toward the stadium.

And then there are the people who simply enjoy walking through Auburn and watching it all happen.

For someone considering a move to Auburn, football weekends are worth understanding because they temporarily change the rhythm of the city.

Traffic increases.

Pedestrian activity increases.

Restaurants and shops get busier.

And areas near Auburn University and Jordan-Hare Stadium can feel completely different on a home football Saturday than they do on an ordinary weekday.

That’s something I discuss with relocation buyers, especially when they’re considering homes or condos close to campus.

A Weather Delay Changes the Evening

Saturday night’s game also provided a reminder that game-day plans don’t always go according to plan.

The scheduled evening kickoff was delayed because of lightning in the area.

That’s part of an outdoor sporting event in Alabama. Weather can change the timing, and fans sometimes have to adjust.

Eventually, though, it was time for football.

Auburn Beats Southern Miss 43–8

Once the game got underway, Auburn didn’t waste much time.

The Tigers defeated Southern Miss 43–8, giving Auburn a win in its first home game of the 2026 season.

And inside Jordan-Hare Stadium, you get the sights and sounds that don’t quite translate through a television screen.

The student section chanting “War Eagle!”

The band.

The cheers.

The lights.

The players taking the field.

More than 80,000 people gathered in one place.

And, of course:

What Auburn Football Game Day Means When You Live Here

When buyers tell me they’re considering moving to Auburn, Alabama, I want them to understand the everyday community as well as the big events.

That means the calendar matters.
