Moving to Auburn Alabama? Here’s What People Get Wrong About “War Eagle”

Moving to Auburn Alabama? Here’s What People Get Wrong About “War Eagle”

Moving to Auburn Alabama means you’re going to hear “War Eagle” constantly—and one of the biggest surprises for newcomers is that it’s not Auburn’s mascot at all. Auburn University (https://www.auburn.edu/) is home of the Tigers, while “War Eagle” is the battle cry that connects generations of Auburn fans, alumni, students, and locals.

If you’re planning to relocate to Auburn, this is one of those cultural things that actually matters more than people realize.

People don’t just scream “War Eagle” inside Jordan-Hare Stadium (https://auburntigers.com/jordan-hare-stadium). They say it in grocery stores. Walking trails. Restaurants. Neighborhoods. At Auburn Mall (https://www.shopauburnalabama.com/). You’ll hear complete strangers say it to each other like it’s a normal greeting—and honestly, after a while, it becomes normal to you too.

That sense of connection is one reason so many people fall in love with living in Auburn Alabama.

So… What Is “War Eagle”?

Auburn’s mascot is the Tiger.

“War Eagle” is the spirit.

The most famous origin story traces back to an 1892 football game where a live eagle reportedly broke free and flew over the field during Auburn’s victory. Over time, “War Eagle” became Auburn’s rallying cry and part of the culture itself.

And unlike some college towns where school spirit only shows up on game days, Auburn carries that energy year-round.

You’ll hear:

  • “War Eagle!” at coffee shops
  • “War Eagle!” while walking downtown
  • “War Eagle!” from neighbors
  • “War Eagle!” from total strangers in airports

It’s honestly one of the most unique parts of Auburn University relocation that people don’t fully understand until they live here.

It’s Bigger Than Football

Yes, Auburn football is huge.

But “War Eagle” is also about:

  • community
  • friendliness
  • shared identity
  • connection
  • belonging

That’s part of why so many Auburn alumni eventually move back here permanently.

I’ve had buyers relocating from Texas, Florida, and California tell me they noticed something different almost immediately after moving here: people acknowledge each other.

That doesn’t happen everywhere anymore.

What This Means for Auburn Neighborhoods

One thing I always tell buyers during Auburn homes for sale tours is this:

Every neighborhood has a different personality.

Some neighborhoods are:

  • super social
  • full of Auburn alumni
  • golf-cart friendly
  • community-event heavy

Others are:

  • quieter
  • more private
  • more wooded
  • more laid back

And that matters when you relocate to Auburn.

Because if you love the Auburn Family atmosphere, there are definitely neighborhoods where you’ll feel it more strongly.

You’ll see neighbors chatting outside.
People walking dogs together.
Kids riding bikes.
Tailgate flags up during football season.
Random “War Eagle!” greetings during evening walks.

That culture becomes part of everyday life.

Auburn vs. Opelika Culture

Here’s a quick breakdown I often explain to relocation buyers:

Area Feel
Auburn Strong Auburn University energy and alumni culture
Opelika Slightly more historic, relaxed, and eclectic vibe
Near Campus Higher Auburn spirit and activity
Outer Areas More peaceful and private

Both Auburn and Opelika offer great options depending on your personality and lifestyle goals.

That’s why I spend a lot of time helping relocation buyers narrow down where to live in Auburn versus Opelika real estate options.

A Quick Story From a Relocation Client

I once helped a family relocating for Auburn University employment who told me they were shocked the first week they moved here.

They went to dinner, and three different strangers said “War Eagle” to them because they were wearing Auburn shirts.

At first they thought:
“Do we know these people?”

A few months later, they were saying it back automatically.

Now they absolutely love it here.

That’s Auburn.

Schools Matter Too

For families relocating to Auburn Alabama, schools are often a huge part of the decision.

Many buyers specifically ask about:
Auburn City Schools (https://www.auburnschools.org/)

Others prefer Opelika:
Opelika City Schools (https://www.opelikaschools.org/)

The school zones can significantly impact neighborhood choices, commute times, and long-term resale potential.

Why Auburn University Relocation Is Different

Auburn University relocation is unique because people are often moving here for more than just a job.

They’re moving here for:

  • community
  • culture
  • traditions
  • lifestyle
  • connection

That emotional connection is stronger here than in many college towns I’ve seen.

And yes… “War Eagle” becomes part of that experience.

Quick Q&A

Is War Eagle Auburn’s mascot?
No. Auburn’s mascot is the Tiger. “War Eagle” is the battle cry.

Do people really say War Eagle all the time?
Yes. You’ll hear it constantly around Auburn and even outside Alabama.

What’s the best area for Auburn University relocation?
That depends on commute, lifestyle, budget, and whether you want a more social or private neighborhood atmosphere.

Is Auburn friendly to newcomers?
Very much so. Many relocation buyers comment on how welcoming the community feels.
