Move to Auburn: Things Nobody Tells You Before Moving

Move to Auburn, and you’ll discover a few things that probably weren’t in the relocation brochure.
“War Eagle” can carry an entire conversation. “Five minutes from campus” needs a follow-up question. And the Auburn University calendar may become part of your life even if you never set foot in a classroom.
I’ve been in the Auburn area since 1988. I’m an Auburn University alumna, and I help people buy and sell homes here. There’s the Auburn you see while visiting—and then there’s the Auburn you get to know while living here.
Both are worth understanding before you choose a home.

Before You Move to Auburn, Learn Two Words
War Eagle.
That should get you started.
Hello? War Eagle.
Goodbye? War Eagle.
Congratulations? War Eagle.
I like your shirt, don’t know your name, but recognize that we’re both Auburn people?
War Eagle.
You don’t need a complicated response. Say “War Eagle” back and keep going.
Of course, nobody is checking your Auburn vocabulary before you buy a house. You can move here without attending the university or following football. But you’ll probably hear those words often enough that they become familiar pretty quickly.
It’s one of those little details that makes Auburn feel like Auburn.

“Five Minutes From Campus” Requires Another Question
Five minutes when?
On a quiet Tuesday morning?
During a class change?
Before an Auburn football game?
After the game, when a whole lot of people are trying to leave at once?
Those are different situations.
When you’re evaluating a home, a distance on a map tells you only part of the story. The route, time of day and events around town matter, too.
If being close to Auburn University (https://www.auburn.edu/) is important, let’s talk about what “close” means to you.
Do you want to walk to campus? Make a short drive to work? Attend events regularly? Get to Jordan-Hare Stadium (https://auburntigers.com/jordan-hare-stadium) without planning your entire day around the trip?
Those are different home searches.

Your Commute Deserves a Test Drive
Before deciding that a location works, try the drive when you would actually make it.
A peaceful Sunday afternoon won’t tell you everything about your weekday routine.
Drive from a neighborhood to your workplace. Try the grocery trip. Notice the turns, intersections and road access.
Ask yourself:
- Does this route work for my usual schedule?
- How often will I need to cross town?
- Do I want to walk anywhere, or will I drive most places?
- What happens when campus has a major event?
- Would another location make my ordinary week easier?
You’re choosing more than a house. You’re choosing a starting point for daily life.

The University Calendar May Become Your Calendar
You might move here for work, retirement, family or a completely different reason.
You may still find yourself paying attention to Auburn University’s schedule.
Students leave town? You may notice a change in the pace around campus.
Students return? You may notice that, too.
Move-in, graduation and major events can affect particular routes, parking areas and businesses. The impact depends on where you live and where you’re going.
A useful habit is checking the Auburn University academic calendar (https://auburn.edu/about/academic-calendar/) when planning a visit or a busy moving weekend.
You don’t have to organize your entire life around the university. It simply helps to know what’s happening.

Auburn Still Has Those Small-Town Moments
Auburn has changed considerably since I arrived in 1988.
But sometimes it still feels like somebody knows somebody who knows you.
You meet someone downtown and discover a shared connection. A conversation about a house becomes a conversation about a former professor. Someone recognizes your name before you finish introducing yourself.
So behave yourself downtown.
Somebody probably knows somebody who knows you.
I’m mostly kidding.
Mostly.
Those familiar connections are part of what I’ve enjoyed about living here for so long.

A Wonderful Weekend Isn’t Your Entire Lifestyle
Visiting Auburn for a football weekend can be a lot of fun.
Living here also includes taking out the trash, buying groceries, getting to appointments and figuring out where you put the garage remote.
When we look at homes, I want you to picture an ordinary Wednesday alongside your favorite Saturday.
Where would you shop? How would you get to work? Do you want to be near the activity, or would you prefer more distance from it?
Some buyers want frequent access to downtown and campus. Others want a location that makes their daily errands simpler.
Neither preference needs an apology.

Compare Locations Before Choosing a Favorite
| What matters to you? | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Frequent campus visits | Actual routes, parking and walking options |
| A manageable commute | Travel at your normal departure time |
| Convenient shopping | Routes to your preferred stores and services |
| Outdoor space | Lot layout, upkeep and how you would use it |
| Everyday comfort | Visit at different times and observe the surroundings |
You can begin exploring Auburn subdivisions (https://auburnopelikaalrealestate.com/auburn-al-subdivisons/) and Opelika subdivisions (https://auburnopelikaalrealestate.com/opelika-al-subdivisions/) without deciding in advance which area must win.
For some buyers, access to Opelika Tiger Town (https://www.opelika-al.gov/397/Tiger-Town) matters more than being near campus.
If school assignment is part of your search, confirm the specific address directly with Auburn City Schools (https://www.auburnschools.org/) or the applicable district.

A Relocation Example
Imagine a buyer who begins with one requirement: “I want to be close to Auburn University.”
After testing the commute and discussing daily routines, the buyer realizes that campus visits will happen twice a month, while work and errands happen almost every day.
That doesn’t automatically rule out a home near campus. It gives the buyer a better way to compare options.
The goal is a location that fits the life you will actually live.
