Moving to Auburn with Pets: What Home Buyers Should Consider

Moving to Auburn with Pets: What Home Buyers Should Consider

Moving to Auburn with pets means the house is only part of your decision. If a dog, cat, or other pet is coming with you, it’s worth thinking about how the property and surrounding area will work for their everyday needs too.

That beautiful Auburn home may have the kitchen you love.

But what about the yard?

Can you install the fence you want?

Are there HOA restrictions you need to review?

Where will you walk your dog?

How busy are the surrounding streets?

Where is veterinary care in relation to the property?

And how much time do you really want to spend maintaining that enormous backyard?

Your pets can’t tour an Auburn home and tell you:

“Yep, this one works for me.” 🐾

You have to think through their daily routine for them.

The right Auburn home should work for every member of your household—including the four-legged ones.

Moving to Auburn with Pets? Start With Their Routine

When you’re moving to Auburn with pets, think about an ordinary day rather than simply the day you tour the house.

What happens first thing in the morning?

Does your dog need to go directly into a fenced yard?

Do you take a long walk?

Do you need sidewalks?

Do you have a dog that’s easily distracted by traffic or other animals?

Do you have an older pet that may have difficulty with stairs?

Do you have an indoor cat who likes sitting in a sunny window?

Do you need space for crates, food, litter boxes, pet supplies, or grooming?

These may sound like little things.

Once you live there, they’re part of your routine every single day.

A Big Yard Isn’t the Whole Answer

Buyers with dogs often tell me:

“We need a big yard.”

Maybe you do.

But let’s think about what that really means.

A larger yard can provide more outdoor space, but it can also mean:

• More mowing
• More landscaping
• More leaves
• More maintenance
• More fencing if the property isn’t already fenced
• More time and expense keeping everything maintained

Sometimes buyers realize they don’t necessarily need the biggest yard they can find.

They need a yard that functions well for the way they and their pets live.

Those aren’t always the same thing.

Fencing Can Be Extremely Important

If fencing matters to you, don’t assume you’ll automatically be able to install whatever fence you want after closing.

Look at the property.

Is it already fenced?

If so, what kind of fence?

Does its layout work for your needs?

If there isn’t a fence, what would it take to add one?

And if the property is governed by an HOA, you’ll want to investigate applicable restrictions and approval requirements.

A beautiful backyard doesn’t help much if you’re picturing a particular fence and later discover that your plans don’t comply with applicable restrictions.

Ask before you buy.

Check HOA Restrictions Before You Buy

If you’re considering a home, condo, or townhome with an HOA, review the applicable governing documents and current rules rather than relying on assumptions.

Depending on the community, rules may address matters such as:

• Fencing
• Exterior modifications
• Common areas
• Pet-related provisions
• Yard use
• Architectural approval procedures

The specific rules vary by community and can change.

If something is important to your purchase—especially a fence or another exterior modification—verify it before making plans around it.

That’s one reason I consider covenants and restrictions important information for buyers.

Where Will You Walk Your Dog?

This is one of those questions that’s easy to overlook when you’re focused on the house.

If you walk your dog every day, where will you actually go?

Look at the area surrounding the property.

Are there sidewalks?

What are the roads like?

How much traffic do you observe?

How does the street layout work with the kind of walk you prefer?

Would your normal route require crossing a busy road?

Would you be comfortable following that routine early in the morning or later in the day?

Different dog owners have very different routines, and different dogs have different needs.

A short walk may be plenty for one household.

Another buyer may want room for much longer daily walks.

Think about your real routine—not an imaginary one.

Traffic and Street Layout Matter

Traffic isn’t just about your commute.

It can matter when you’re walking a dog too.

Some buyers prefer sidewalks.

Some want lower-traffic residential streets.

Others aren’t particularly concerned because most of their pet’s exercise happens in a fenced yard.

The important thing is noticing the surroundings while you’re evaluating the property.

A listing photograph isn’t going to show you everything you may want to know about your future walking routine.

Think About Auburn’s Weather

If you’re relocating from another part of the country, Alabama weather may change how you exercise your pet.

Auburn can be hot and humid during warmer months.

That may mean adjusting the time of day you walk a dog or how long you’re outside.

Your pet’s individual breed, age, health, coat, and veterinary guidance matter too.

For a relocation buyer accustomed to a cooler climate, it’s simply another practical part of planning daily life in Auburn.

Veterinary Care Is Worth Considering

Veterinary care may not be the first thing you think about while searching for an Auburn home, but it’s worth adding to your relocation checklist.

Before moving, consider researching:

• Routine veterinary care
• Emergency veterinary options
• Grooming if needed
• Boarding or pet-sitting services
• Pet supply stores
• Any specialty care your pet requires

If your pet needs frequent veterinary appointments, location may matter more to you than it would to someone whose pet only needs routine visits.

It’s another example of why relocation is about more than the house.

Condos and Townhomes Require Different Questions

Not every pet owner wants a single-family home.

An Auburn condo or townhome may work beautifully for some buyers.

But pet owners should ask additional questions.

Where does the pet go outside?

How much private outdoor space is available?

What common areas are available?

What do the governing documents say?

Are there stairs?

How will your particular pet handle the layout?

A condo near Auburn University might be perfect for one pet owner and completely impractical for another.

Again, there’s no universal answer.

It depends on you and your pet.

Don’t Forget Your Own Lifestyle

Here’s something else I think buyers sometimes do:

They focus so much on finding the perfect house for the dog that they forget the humans have to live there too. 😂

The property still needs to work for you.

Think about:

• Your commute
• Home size
• Budget
• Maintenance
• Auburn University access
• Shopping and restaurants
• Downtown Auburn
• Auburn football and game-day activity
• Your expected length of ownership

If you’re connected to Auburn University (https://www.auburn.edu/), commute and campus access may be especially important.

If Auburn football is a big part of why you love the area, consider how your location works during home football weekends and in relation to Jordan-Hare Stadium (https://auburntigers.com/jordan-hare-stadium).

Maybe you love being near Downtown Auburn and all the activity.

Maybe you’d rather live farther from the busiest game-day areas.

Your pet’s needs matter.

So do yours.

Auburn or Opelika With Pets?

If you’re relocating to the area, don’t assume you have to choose Auburn before we start looking.

Depending on your budget, commute, preferred property type, yard needs, current inventory, and other priorities, it may be useful to compare Auburn and Opelika.

You may find that one city offers more of the properties you’re looking for at the time you’re buying.

Or you may quickly decide you strongly prefer one over the other.

That’s your decision.

My job is to help you understand your options.

A Realistic Pet Owner Relocation Example

Imagine you’re relocating to Auburn with a large dog.

Your original wish list says:

Four bedrooms. Two-car garage. Big backyard.

That’s a good start.

But then we talk more.

You walk your dog every day.

You want a fenced yard.

You don’t want to spend every weekend maintaining a huge property.

Your dog is getting older, so you’re thinking about stairs.

You’d like convenient access to veterinary care.

And you have a particular commute.

Now I understand your search much better.

Maybe the answer isn’t simply:

“Find the biggest backyard.”

Maybe it’s:

“Find a manageable property with the right layout, outdoor space, location, and the ability to accommodate the fencing and routine that matter to you.”

That’s a much more useful home search.

Quick Q&A About Moving to Auburn With Pets

What should pet owners consider when buying an Auburn home?

Consider the property’s layout, yard, fencing, applicable HOA rules, walking routine, surrounding streets, traffic, maintenance needs, veterinary access, and how the home works for both you and your pet.

Should I look for a large yard if I have a dog?

Maybe, but bigger isn’t automatically better. Consider how much outdoor space your dog actually needs and how much yard maintenance you want.

Can I add a fence after buying an Auburn home?

Possibly, but don’t assume. Applicable HOA requirements, covenants, architectural controls, property conditions, easements, and local requirements may affect your plans. Investigate before relying on a future fence.

Should I review HOA rules if I have pets?

Yes. If a property has an HOA or other governing restrictions, review the current documents for provisions relevant to your plans and pets.

Are sidewalks important when buying with a dog?

That depends on your walking routine and preferences. Buyers who regularly walk their dogs may want to evaluate sidewalks, street layout, crossings, observed traffic, and surrounding routes.

Should I consider veterinary care before moving?

It’s smart to research routine and emergency veterinary options, particularly if your pet needs ongoing or specialized care.

Should I consider Opelika too?

Depending on your commute, budget, property preferences, and current inventory, comparing Auburn and Opelika may give you additional options.
