Have you discovered the Graves Cottage at Auburn University?

Hello, Auburn enthusiasts! Have you ever taken a stroll through our beloved campus and stumbled upon the Graves Center remnants? If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat because today, we’re diving into a bit of Auburn history that’s as fascinating as it is charming.

Picture this: it’s the 1930s, and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) is bustling with activity. During this time, the Graves Center began to take shape, courtesy of the Agricultural Extension Service. It wasn’t just a single building; oh no, it was a sprawling complex consisting of thirty quaint cottages, an amphitheater, a grand dining hall, and even a brass bust paying homage to Governor Bibb Graves, a prominent figure from the New Deal era.

Now, these cottages weren’t just any old buildings; they were designed in the elegant Greek Revival style, adding a touch of classical charm to Auburn’s landscape. Originally, they were meant to house agriculturalists visiting for conventions, but fate had other plans. Can you believe that at one point, they actually became temporary homes for Auburn’s football team? Talk about a unique piece of Auburn’s sports history!

And let’s not forget about the dining hall, where generations of students enjoyed meals, danced the night away at costume parties, and proudly walked across the stage during commencement exercises. It was more than just a cafeteria; it was the heart of campus life.

As time passed, the Graves Center underwent changes, with some parts being relocated or repurposed. The brass bust of Governor Bibb Graves found its new home in the Auburn University Special Collections and Archives, a fitting tribute to a bygone era.

Today, if you wander around campus, you’ll still find echoes of the Graves Center. The Graves Amphitheater, with its rich history rooted in the granite setts once paving the streets of downtown Montgomery, stands proudly at the corner of Duncan Drive and Graves Drive. And not too far away, one of the original Greek Revival cottages still stands as a testament to Auburn’s enduring legacy.

As an award-winning realtor with over 35 years of experience in the Auburn area, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of our beloved town firsthand. From its rich history to its vibrant present, Auburn holds a special place in my heart, and I’m thrilled to share these stories with you. So next time you’re exploring campus or considering a move to our charming community, remember the tales of the Graves Center and the countless other hidden gems waiting to be discovered in Auburn, Alabama.
