Auburn University’s Davis Arboretum, the Founder’s Oak
Located in Auburn University’s Davis Arboretum, the Founder’s Oak symbolizes a strong foundation and a deeply rooted history. Erected in 1850, just six years before East Alabama Male College was established, the Post Oak tree has seen almost two centuries of life in Auburn, Alabama. Now, it is a recognized historic site by the Alabama Historical Association, and is surrounded by the many students, residents and visitors who step on campus each year. Located across from the President’s Mansion on Garden Drive, the Founders’ Oak measures in at 88 feet tall, 47.3 inches in diameter, and 89 feet wide. The tree’s solid base and strong branches have stood firm through years of treacherous weather conditions, including Hurricane Eloise’s appearance in 1975. The Founder’s Oak is expected to see the start of the next century, but for now, it continues to serve as a symbol of Auburn – both in history and in spirit.
