The 2016 Alabama Oyster Social has partnered with an All-Star roster of some of the South’s most influential chefs as well as our friends from Evans Meats. Chefs Chris Hastings of Hot & Hot Fish Club & Ovenbird, Ryan Prewitt of Peche, Bryan Rackley of Kimball House, LisaMarie White and Kelly Fields of Willa Jean, Adam Evans of Brezza Cucina, Justin DeVillier of La Petite Grocery, Michael Gulotta of MoPho, Derek Emerson of Walker’s Drive-In, Vishwesh Bhatt of Snackbar, and Alabama chefs Leo Maurelli, Bill Briand, George McMillan, Ban Stewart, Caleb Fischer, Rob McDaniel, and David Bancroft will be featuring fresh shucked samples washed down with libations provided by Back Forty Beer, Sazerac Bourbon, Grassroots Wholesale, International Wine and Pinnacle Imports. The tasting tables will feature southern fisherman, farmers, foragers, butchers, brewers, distillers, vintners, and shellfish enthusiasts all to highlight the progressive, sustainable efforts of Alabama oyster farms. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory to first help with the relocation of the research efforts and commercial farms to new farm sites, and ultimately to expand the capacity of Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory’s capacity to serve this flourishing, ‘blue-green’ industry. We, the chefs, are asking for your support to celebrate the Alabama oyster but mainly because the oyster farmers need OUR help! On January 29th 2016,we will be hosting the 2nd annual Alabama Oyster Social in Auburn, Alabama with a goal of raising $100,000 to help offset the financial crisis that these farming families now face. Please join our fundraising efforts by reserving your tickets for this year’s rally! The second installment of JCSM’s biennial Out of the Box exhibition will open this fall with contemporary sculptor and visual artist Willie Cole serving as juror. Ten new sculptures will be selected for installation on the museum’s grounds from among nationwide submissions. Three top prizewinners will be chosen from those finalists for recognition during the exhibition’s opening tailgate festivities on October 2nd. Museum visitors will once again be wowed by large-scale works sited along the Lethander Art Path (LAP) around JCSM’s lake and in the field at the southern end of the building. All works will remain on view for a full year. The inaugural, 2013 competition received more than 120 submissions from nearly 70 artists and led to the addition of two new works for the museum’s growing permanent collection of outdoor sculpture. This year’s exhibition promises to continue that success with contemporary, exciting works for our juror to consider and for our visitors’ eventual enjoyment. It is our aim for Out of the Box to continue to grow and advance support and appreciation for outdoor sculpture in our community. JCSM would like to thank our sponsor for Out of the Box, whose generous support helps make this exhibition possible: Julian Roberts Haynes, in memory of Dr. Lucile McGehee Haynes, and Grace and David E. Johnson. A portion of the awards for the 10 finalists is supported by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information on the exhibition, as well as our community tailgate celebration October 2, head to our website!

The Department of Art and Art History at Auburn University is a vibrant community of artists and scholars who not only teach, they actively pursue their own art and research. Success of the department’s mission to foster learning in an environment of experimentation, innovation, creative inquiry, and critical thinking is demonstrated yearly in the distinctive work of its student body and graduates. This triennial exhibition, featuring permanent studio faculty, adjunct instructors, and studio technical staff, is anoher vital expression of the faculty’s commitment and offers students the chance to observe directly the close relationship between classroom activity and creative practice. Moreover, the exhibition provides the larger community an insider’s look at significant art being produced at Auburn yet seen more often in venues outside the area. Showcasing recent paintings, sculpture, works on paper, ceramics, digital imagery, and other media, the exhibition reveals the breadth of interests and investigations by the Department of Art and Art History’s diverse studio faculty and staff. An illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition, which highlights recent activity of the department’s art historians in addition to the exhibiting artists. Beginning January 27 through March 9, Wednesday’s “A Little Art Talk” will be presented by faculty in the exhibition. “A Little Art Talk” lasts 15-30 minutes leaving ample time to drop by the Museum Café for lunch. Attendees will get free ice tea or coffee.

In Shakespeare’s Sonnet 73, he paints a stark metaphoric image of winter. That time of year thou mayst in me behold When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang. Here in east-central Alabama, we are fortunate to be home to many feathered denizens of the winter landscape. This exhibition features twelve of John James Audubon’s prints from The Birds of America, including birds that inhabit our environs during the winter. John James Audubon’s Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America: A Context John James Audubon said of his 1843 western journey, “I am going to collect all possible information about Quadrupeds during my stay here and from good sources. My head is actually swimming with excitement and I cannot write any more.” Supported by his four traveling companions and a rugged array of American Fur Company hunters, the great American woodsman was the impresario of what became an excessive, indulgent sporting trip on an epic scale that resulted in some of the most vivid and appealing accounts of hunting, adventure and wild animal life on the distant western prairies that had been published. His experience on the prairies also enabled him to render his lithographic images of the large predators and game animals all the more bold and charismatic. —Daniel Patterson, from The Missouri River Journals of John James Audubon (2016)
