Ever wonder why we yell “War Eagle!” but call ourselves the Tigers? Let’s dive into one of Auburn University’s most iconic traditions—our nickname!
Auburn University’s nickname is as fierce as our school spirit—the Tigers. We’ve proudly been known as the Auburn Tigers since our first football game against the Georgia Bulldogs in 1892. The nickname “Tigers” was inspired by a line in Oliver Goldsmith’s 1770 poem, “The Deserted Village”: “where crouching tigers await their hapless prey…” This powerful imagery perfectly captures the strength and tenacity that defines Auburn athletics and the spirit of the Auburn Family.
And while our battle cry, “War Eagle,” might cause some confusion, it’s important to remember that Auburn’s only official mascot is Aubie the Tiger. We’re never referred to as “Eagles” or “War Eagles”—we’re simply the Tigers who passionately yell “War Eagle!” to rally our team and show our school pride.
