You may be surprised to learn that people are working hard to make sure Alabama has more snakes. Not just any snakes though, the largest North American snake there is: the Eastern Indigo Snake. The Eastern Indigo Snake is a federally-threatened species in the United States and it went extinct in Alabama sometime in the mid-20th century. I’ll talk about why that matters, what it takes to raise and release hundreds of rare snakes into the wilds of south Alabama, and how we are figuring out if our efforts are paying off.
